Ask HN: What do you use as your "main" source of file storage?
My main laptop has always been the primary source (with backups) but I'm wondering how many HN readers use a NAS or something else as the "main" source of truth for their file system and storage.
My laptop(s)'s harddrive(s). I assume any failure in my past laptops harddrives will be recoverable with FutureTec(TM) similar to the frozen human heads assuming they will live again with FutureTec(TM)'s revolutionary technology.
edit. but seriously I tear apart all my computing devices and retain the harddrive because
* 92TB nas from qnap in raid 5 (with 2 backup drives ready just incase) - local docs, software installers, plex library, ebook library, hobby files (3d printer, cnc, laser cutter, paper crafting, ham radio configs etc)
* Google drive for some end of life stuff shared with family
* imgur for some less personal images that i want to be able to throw into chat when applicable.
I guess it depends on what kind of data is in question. Wherever it is, my data quickly makes it to my basement server (built from old desktop parts), which is then backed up.
I use my main laptop and backup periodically to an external drive or Google Drive depending on what it is I'm storing.
No backups because YOLO.
